Into the Open II, a walk in memory of Carien

Friday 28 August, we organised a walk in Rotterdamse Kralingse Bos with John Verkerke caretaker of the place.Slide1

For almost all his life, John Verkerke has witnessed life and given life to the Kralingse Bos. Already 25 years as caretaker and director. We discovered the importance of the pike (snoek) in this place and heard John’s stories of the kestrel (Torenvalk) feeding her five young, the presence of the kingfishers (ijsvogel) and the stork (ooievaar) in their nest co-evolving fit frogs (see also John Verkerke’s pictures below).

A year ago, we organised the first ‘Into the Open‘ event with Carien de Jonge (eco-philosopher, beekeeper and entrepreneur) and Frans Vera (ecologist and ornithologist) in the Oostvaardersplassen.

On May 22nd my dear friend and eco-philosoher colleague Carien de Jonge passed on. This walk was in memory of Carien.


We welcomed 30 people.

Date: Friday afternoon 28th of August 14-17:00, walk was in Dutch

Place: Kralingse Bos in Rotterdam Slide1

Meeting place: Heemtuin (there will be toilet here)

Parking: Langepad of Pr Beatrixlaan (10-min walk to Heemtuin)

Public transport: tram 7 from Rotterdam CS/Blaak (stop Crooswijksestraat, Vlietlaan or Jericholaan); metro Gerdesiaweg or Voorschoterlaan (20-min walk to Heemtuin)

Price: donate what you can and how you valued this. With your donation, we cover the costs, plant a tree in memory of Carien and maintain a bench in Kralingse Bos.
