RESEARCH | HOLISTIC LEARNING | CREATION for vital food, water and landscapes

Li An Phoa is a passionate systems-thinker engaged in research, holistic learning and creation for vital food, water and landscapes. She initiates and facilitates multi-stakeholder processes. She work with large organisations such as Unilever and the Rwandan Ministry of Health, as well as innovative farmers, artists and indigenous communities. She teaches at Rotterdam School of Management, Nyenrode Business University, Schumacher College and co-founded Spring College teaching hundreds of people outdoors about ecology and economy; our daily lives and habits and the visions we hold for the world.

She has three master degrees in Business Administration (at Rotterdam School of Management), Holistic Science (or Whole System Ecology at Schumacher College, School of Earth, Ocean, and Environment, University of Plymouth in the UK) and Philosophy (at the Erasmus University Rotterdam). She lived more than eight years as a nomad.

Since 2005, she teaches an outdoor course ‘Companies in Ecologies’ that she co-designed at the Rotterdam School of Management.  Since 2007, she is self-employed with her organisation BEAR (Beautiful Earth Action & Research). She researches responsible business practices, e.g. preparing Unilever’s ‘Sustainable Living Plan’ and studying the impact of dairy and beef for the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative Platform.  With BEAR, she works with various international (business) organisations and local communities to care for our Beautiful Earth through Actions & Research.

She explores how we can embody and live together in the Earth-Body with our selves, each other and all other living systems. Li An assesses the (dis)function of the whole life cycle of products & services and their relationships embedded in living systems. She evaluates where and how to improve and revitalise the intention, the language, the design and the ecological, social and economic footprints; she identifies alternatives; and supports the creation of radically new ways of living and doing things. She invites people to step outside four walls and step into the outdoors to engage your whole being with a waking up of the senses to meet the more-than-human world. Through walking and asking questions, she guides people to think, feel, intuit and sense how to live: how to integrate their passions and their talents; their personal and professional lives; their dreams and visions; and how to align an economy based on ecological values and principles towards vital, beautiful and functional living systems. Li An envisions a vital world in which people relate beautifully with themselves, each other and all other life forms.
